BEGIN - 2022
In October 2022, the All Island Schools’ English Literary Association (AISELA), under the guidance of English Literature Sri Lanka (ELSL), embarked on a journey of hope and empowerment with “Begin,” a project dedicated to fostering quality English education among underprivileged children. This initiative, spearheaded by AISELA’s Head of Public Relations, Mst. Sahein Wijeyeratne, and supported by the association’s President (Mst P. Pethiyagoda), Vice President (Miss G. Senerath), Assistant Secretary (Miss T. Karandawala), Treasurer (Mst E. Cuttilan), Editors (Miss S. Ketakumbura, Miss P. Dharmawardane, and Mst L. Fonseka), and Media Coordinator (Mst V. Abeysuriya), found its first home at the Sri Jinananda Children’s Home.
Guided by the unwavering vision of ELSL’s CEO, Mr. Ravi Gunawardane, “Begin” seeks to bridge the educational gap faced by children from underprivileged backgrounds. Recognising that English language skills are crucial in today’s world, the project aims to equip these young minds with the tools and knowledge they need to not only excel in their academic pursuits but also navigate the complexities of a globalised world with confidence.
The inaugural session of “Begin” on October 30, 2022, resonated with the joy of learning and the promise of a brighter future. The project utilises interactive and engaging methods to make learning English fun and accessible. This commitment to innovative teaching breaks away from traditional rote-based approaches, fostering a love for language and a thirst for knowledge within the children.
“Begin” stands as a testament to the power of collective action and a shared commitment to educational equity. By providing underprivileged children with access to quality English education, the project empowers them to dream big and reach their full potential. It is a beacon of hope, a spark that ignites not only academic success but also a sense of self-worth and agency in these young lives.
As “Begin” continues its journey, it invites everyone to join in its mission. Volunteers, educators, and individuals with a passion for making a difference can contribute their time, skills, or resources to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive. Together, we can make “Begin” a catalyst for positive change, empowering underprivileged children to write their own success stories.
